Schiphol 'bomb threat' man held for another 14 days

Police have been given an extra 14 days to question a man who brought Schiphol airport to a near-standstill when he claimed to be carrying a bomb.

Schiphol: Dozens of flights were delayed or cancelled. The 40-year-old Russian man was led away after a two-hour stand-off on Monday, which began when he threatened to blow up part of the airport.

Bomb squad officers established that he had no explosives on him and he was taken into custody.

Prosecutors have refused to speculate about the man’s motive, but have asked for a psychiatrist to assess him.

He has been charged with making a bomb threat and endangering airport security.

Witnesses said the drama began when he refused to pay a restaurant bill and fled into a nearby toilet.

Two departure halls were cleared in the wake of the bomb threat at 11am and remained closed until shortly after 3.30pm.

A spokesman for the airport said the incident had caused dozens of flights to be delayed or cancelled.
