Student suffers facial burns after 'fireshot' backfires

A 22-year-old female student has been rushed to hospital after her face caught fire in a drinking stunt that went wrong.

The woman ordered a ‘fireshot’, where the drinker fills their mouth with an alcoholic shot which the barman then lights, at a cafe in Groningen.

However, the flames engulfed the woman’s face, leaving her with second degree burns.

She was taken by ambulance to the city’s Martini Ziekenhuis before being transferred to a specialist burns unit in Beverwijk.

A spokesman for the Martini hospital said it was the first case doctors had encountered of somebody suffering burns from a fireshot.

No further details were disclosed about the woman’s state of health.
