Health insurance to rise by average of €100 in 2012

Health insurance premiums are to rise by around 10 per cent in 2012, costing the average family an extra €100 a year.

The impact will be hardest on the elderly and those on low incomes, experts warn. Most of the extra cost is accounted for by steep rises in supplementary insurance, which is going up by between eight and 19 per cent, researchers for comparison website independer found.

The basic insurance package is also increasing, by two or three per cent in most cases, and from January 1 the compulsory excess on claims will rise from €170 to €220 per year.

The National Institute for Family Finance Information (Nibud) said it was surprised by the amount by which premiums were going up.

It warned that low income groups, large families and the elderly would be hardest hit by higher health costs.

Insurers must disclose their annual premiums for 2012 by November 19.
