No need to go Dutch: theatre offers two-for-one deal for ex-partners

A theatre in Amsterdam has come up with a novel promotion for a drama about marital breakdown - an offer to take your ex-partner along for free.

A dish best served cold?Schuldeisers, which is on at the Compagnietheater in Amsterdam, is a one-act play which centres on the question of whether a jilted partner is entitled to compensation - or revenge.

Written in 1888 by August Strindberg, it traces the disintegration of a marriage through adultery through conversations between a woman, her ex-husband and her new partner.

Its producers hope to boost audiences with a two-for-one offer for people who go to see the play with a former partner.

‘You can bring more than one ex if you like, but they will have to pay,’ added a spokesman for performing company Het Nationale Toneel.

Billed as ‘how to wreck a marriage in 90 minutes’, the revival of Strindberg’s psychological drama has received mixed reviews in the press.

NRC Handelsblad judged that a fine performance by the three actors  - two men and one woman - only partially rescued the lukewarm and ponderous script.

Schuldeisers is on at the Compagnietheater until May 12. Click here for booking details.
