The driver’s two colleagues raised the alarm after they came out of the Rabobank branch in Ridderkerk, south-east of Rotterdam, to find the van open and the driver missing.
Police have not stated whether the driver was the victim of a robbery or was involved in the loss of the money, said to be a “considerable amount”.
Police dogs and a search helicopter have been scouring the area for any trace of the driver since the incident on Tuesday morning.
The van, which belongs to secure transport firm Brink’s, was undamanged and has been taken away for inspection.
Hours later a second van carrying money was targeted in a hold-up at a shopping centre in Leiderdorp.
Two men held up the van before fleeing the scene. It is not known if anything was taken.
Police did not confirm if the two incidents were linked.
Brink’s declined to comment on the earlier incident, which comes months after one of its branches in Amsterdam-Zuidoost was the subject of a violent hold-up at the end of June.
