An amateur footballer is to go on trial in August accused of killing a 77-year-old spectator during a match in Amsterdam.

The incident happened during an amateur league game on December 3 last year.Silvester M. is alleged to have launched a flying kick at the man’s stomach after being sent off during an amateur league game in December last year.

The victim suffered a ruptured spleen and died in hospital a few days later.

Eyewitnesses said M., 32, who played for Sporting Noord, appeared to have reacted to a comment by the spectator as he left the field.

Judges at a hearing in Amsterdam on Thursday decided M. should remain in custody until his trial, which is scheduled for August 16.

Six witnesses are due to give evidence in June and July about the incident on December 3.

M. and his lawyer, Bram Moszkowicz, did not attend the latest hearing.
